Diana Krall Plaza
The Diana Krall Plaza is part of Nanaimo 's efforts to revitalize the downtown area. Phase 2 construction is complete with perfect timing for daffodils and spring flowers. The entry way to the plaza is designed as a tuning fork with a bronze bird watching over the area. The plaza is now lit up at night and extra waste bins have been added.
The lamp posts that now light up the plaza are designed to weather into the same colours as the plaza itself. Although the lamp posts are of a somewhat strange design, it's great to see some improvements for the downtown area in any way shape or form. The stone bricks have been rearranged to spell out Diana Krall Plaza .
With construction only being completed days ago, many people have stopped to enjoy the plaza. Buskers are back in force from day one of completion and love the music theme that the plaza portrays. The new benches are a wonderful upgrade from the old cement blocks.
With stage 2 now complete, there's more on the way for 2010. Total cost of the plaza is around $400,000. Will it boost the pedestrian traffic as it's supposed too? Only time will tell.
